What is short-term trading?
Just like long-term trading, the goal of any investor is to sell an asset at a price higher than they bought it. With short-term trading, this period between buying and selling is very short, from just a few minutes to a few weeks. This means that short-term traders are more involved with the day-to-day performance of their assets and they spend more time researching trends and making predictions. What for? There’s an opportunity to make big gains by buying and selling quickly.
Why day trade cryptocurrencies?
Japan’s Financial Services Agency (FSA) in 2018 reported that there are over 3.5 million Japanese traders on cryptocurrency exchanges transacting mostly BTC, ETH, XRP, BCH and LTC. Japanese traders have been notably dominant in BTC trading, accounting for 60.65% of global trades. The FSA said that a “remarkable amount of funds has flowed into virtual currency transactions.” This is one clear manifestation of crypto’s massive appeal for traders.
The volatility of the market can be a double-edged sword. In March 2020, the price of BTC dropped aggressively — in correlation with the stock market — and the majority of replacement coins drops further. However, crypto-assets recently have managed to recover some of their losses. Since the BTC lows of $3,775 in March, BTC has rallied by about 77%. Compare that with the S&P 500, which has fallen by 7.4%, and the Dow Jones, which is off by about 10% over the same period.
Trading cryptocurrency can be very rewarding because of the volatility of the market, high trading volumes and variety of cryptocurrencies traded. There are more than 1,500 tokens to choose from, increasing the chances of making big gains. Coupled with the fact that this market is highly volatile (i.e., a coin’s price can change 20–30% in mere days), this is considered a viable income stream for many.
Tips on short-term trading
Only invest money you can afford to lose
Token prices quickly go up and down and prices can be affected by unforeseen scenarios such as hacks and bugs. It’s a risky market to play in so ensure that you have the capacity to take deep losses before trading.
Avoid FOMO
Cryptocurrencies have a lot of hype around them to the point that FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) has caused traders to buy into the speculation. When there is a huge buzz, those late to the party who buy at a high price face the risk of losing money when the value quickly drops. Analyse markets thoroughly to discern the buzz from the performance of the project, and control your emotions in times of stressful price movement!
Use stop-loss
You won’t profit every time, so use the stop-loss to set a price at which you will sell your token should it lose value significantly. Successful traders employ this tool to cut their losses when the trade no longer favours them.
