Asian financial markets tumbled recently and other financial markets are expected to fall further as investors panic over the rising concerns of geopolitical issues and global disasters.
After fears of a coronavirus crash in the China financial market, Chinese authorities have decided to suspend trading on the nation’s two major stock exchanges in Shanghai and Shen Zhen until 3rd February 2020. Once trading resumes, investors can expect to see a large correction in Chinese stocks if the market starts to panic sell due to fear and uncertainty.
Despite the halt on trading, China-based companies listed on foreign exchanges are the first to be affected by the coronavirus outbreak. On 27th January, U.S listed China Large-Cap ETF (NYSEARCA:FXI) dipped 4% and U.S-listed China Southern Airlines (NYSE:ZNH) and China Eastern Airlines (NYSE:CEA) are both down by 7%.
It’s not just Asia that feels the pain as the US market took a hit as well. US-China trade war and US-Iran tension have caused many worrying over a potential global recession. The S&P 500 closed at its sharpest decline since last November, with a -1.6% fall on 27th January. American Airlines (AAL) fell more than 5%, and Wynn Resorts tumbled 8%.
Despite the downfall in the traditional financial market, one asset class stood out against the stock market crash. On 29th January 2020, Bitcoin rose to US$9,380, the highest since November 2019 and other altcoins follow as the entire cryptocurrency market turns green.
Bitcoin is known to be very sensitive to global news related to the world’s economy. On 13th January, Bitcoin managed to climb to its near-two-month high of $9,194.99 due to the US-Iran tension as more investors deem bitcoin as a safe heaven.
