Internet Fame
“I just can’t believe this is my 15 minutes of fame — I was hoping it would come in another form. But I guess you have to take what you can get.” — Maggie Goldenberger a.k.a. “Ermahgerd Girl”
The “I guess you have to take what you can get” line struck me. There is such a desire to become famous, in any way possible, among youth. Even Scumbag Steve is attempting to use negative internet fame to positively affect his life. “They are part of his brand and, he hopes, will launch him into a career in entertainment,” the Boston article says.
I thought the Goldenberger and Blake Boston features would have come with a lot more regret, anger and helplessness. However, it seems many will take fame at all costs. And studies have shown that fame is now the most sought after life goal: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/yalda-t-uhls/kids-want-fame_b_1201935.html.
In my own life, I’m not sure I buy the “Any Press is Good Press” argument. Seems like the internet mockery and constant attention is a high price to pay for the opportunity to turn fame into something positive.
