I had no idea that the word meme had any scientific origins. It was interesting to see how the term accurately describes internet memes given their role in society and the terms scientific background. In regards to “Scumbag Steve” it was interesting to see the other side of memes, the real people. With the people pictured in memes becoming so iconic, it is easy to forget that they have lives and there are implications to them becoming a viral web sensation. After reading the article I asked myself the question as to why it was that photo that caught on. There are many pictures on the internet that depict someone looking like a “scumbag”, what about this particular photo, and the others that became memes, do people catch onto and spread? I enjoyed reading about the “Ermahgerd meme” because all this time I had thought it was a natural shot, which made the meme much funnier. Realizing that she was playing dress up takes away from some of its humor.
