I thought it was interesting to learn the backstory of people who became Internet famous due to something as simple as a photo. It’s crazy to see how one photo takes on it’s own identity as a story is formed about the person featured. I think the ability to easily add text to a photo is a big part of this development as an image’s meaning can be completely skewed and changed by the words with which it is associated. These pieces also highlight the potentially detrimental impact the virality of the Internet can have. The people involved in these pieces of media cannot control how the Internet audience will decide to interpret the image which can easily lead to negative or embarrassing connotations.
