Social Media’s Dark Side

The article I found to be most interesting was the one discussing how ISIS has leveraged its Twitter presence to help obtain support and media attention. This concept of using personal accounts and posting on their behalf is particularly relevant to me as I allowed the company I interned for this past summer to do just that. However, this was done on a smaller scale for me. I had never considered how this posting could have a big impact on Twitter and the news when done on a larger scale. In that sense this is a brilliant use of the medium as ISIS was able to influence what is trending on Twitter, tactically using the accounts of supporters like puppeteers. This goes along with what was discussed last class as this organization is using social media in order to expand its reach beyond willing supporters. ISIS’s messages are now reaching those connected to their supporters, thus conveying their message to a larger collection of people.
