Today, we’re excited to announce that in our Beta release Gems will sponsor $100,000 worth of micro tasks for an organization that provides utility to the world — think Wikipedia, or Internet Archive — and we need your help: who should we partner with?

How do I suggest an organization and task for the Gems $100k award?

Please join the discussion on Telegram and on Twitter — if you find yourself not having an idea, but want to help, please feel free to 👏, ❤, or share this post.

Qualities of a good potential recipient organization:

  • Provides vast utility to the world (again, think Wikipedia type of good!)
  • Has the need for simple repetitive micro tasks to be completed
  • Doesn’t necessarily have the means to accomplish the tasks

Qualities of a good micro task:

  • Simple, yet requires human judgement
  • Only a basic interface is necessary for completion
  • Part of a larger unified project

Examples of good micro tasks:

  • Annotating images
  • Transcribing audio
  • Data entry

For example, the Smithsonian uses a group of volunteers to transcribe historical documents that are deteriorating, therefore digitizing and preserving their significance.

Why are you doing this?

  • It’s good for society — hopefully we’ll help a wonderful organization with a problem they otherwise couldn’t solve
  • The Gems Platform is a two sided marketplace; eliminating one side in our Beta launch makes it much easier to build for
  • Honing in on one simple repeatable task makes launching the Beta, again, much easier

Can I see the Beta?

We’re going to post a demo of our pre-alpha (that’s the early early stages!) later this week. Stay tuned for the Beta!

We’ll need to connect with the chosen organization (intros are welcomed and encouraged!), work with them to get their tasks queued up, and develop their reusable interface to complete said tasks.

Whether it’s onboarding millions of people to crypto, reducing barriers to participate in the labor pool, or helping create an efficient micro task ecosystem, Gems would like to play a role. Sponsoring the first $100k worth of micro tasks for a great organization is one of our first steps to making a difference.

And we need your help.

Help Gems decide who should get the Gems $100k Sponsorship:

I’d like to thank our advisor Ben Maurer for this wonderful idea.
