Saying Farewell to the Old Kolbenova Flea Market

Local photographer Rishabh Kaul spent months documenting the Kolbenova flea market in Prague 9, a fascinating place where the sellers and buyers are as interesting as the wares they deal.

The flea market recently moved to a new location at U Elektry, Vysočany, which Kaul says “carries none of the charm and chaos of the older place.” He writes:

“It’s a bit more organised, bit more gentrified, bit more boring. But the old place was a time machine. You looked at the stuff and wondered why someone would even sell those things, and more importantly, who would actually buy them. And then you saw the buyers and the sellers in this weirdly anachronistic setting and you understood.”

Kaul says that the people there were less interested in bargaining for goods as much as scavenging through nostalgia.

“After all, this is where you would come to hunt down the last remaining mullets on the planet.”
