As a designer, it is sometimes so hard to define yourself. What type of design do you actually do? People will ask, “do you design furniture?”, I’ll answer “ Nope, I’m an experience designer”. Afterward, there’s always the question “But what does that mean? Do you design interfaces then? User experience? Customer experience?”

Everyone in our industry has claimed their own job titles, and with that, a whole new definition of how each of us understands, creates, and delivers design. So here comes the tricky part: WTF is an experience?

Going back to experience definition, Merriam-Webster defines experience as ‘something personally encountered, undergone, or lived through. This means that to have experience, you must have done, lived, felt, or suffered something.

Surprising colors, peace of mind, and a flying-like sensation are some of the things I can see, feel and live while scuba-diving. Every time you go underwater it is a different experience. An experience is a story full of vivid moments and feelings; whether good or bad, an experience is fresh and stays in your memory. Extraordinary experiences are deeply rooted in insights, motivation, desires, emotions, cultural and social patterns, beliefs, and other deeper considerations.

So what does designing an experience actually mean?

The core meaning of experience design centers on weaving brand features into the brand’s bigger story. When designing experiences, we care about people, their activities, and any contextual information that might affect the action.

It is creating a vivid relationship with your client and creating great memories in their minds.
