IBM World Community Grid was created to leverage the vast network of devices we use everyday to help scientists perform research calculations. With the help of volunteers around the world, the World Community Grid can use individual devices to perform calculations while your device is idle. This allows scientists to “get results in months instead of decades” which will help solve the world’s biggest problems even faster.

According to their website, volunteering will not slow down your device’s performance. IBM’s software will measure the performance and adjust the amount of computing power the software uses. All your personal information will be protected, and the software will only run when your device is plugged into power to save you battery. Worried about using up your cellular data? Luckily, IBM has engineered their software to only run when connected to a wireless network.

At eXPerience Points (XP) we are always looking for new ways to give back to our global community and to further expand our ecosystem. We strongly believe in the mission of the IBM World Community Grid which is why we have created an XP Team on their platform which will focus on helping scientists identify the markers associated with different types of cancer. By joining our team, volunteers will donate unused computing power to the platform and, in turn, will receive a percentage of the 4 Million XP monthly giveaways based on their hashes and points earned for that month.

Mapping Cancer Markers

XP has chosen to focus our computing power to help scientists learn what markers are most commonly associated with a specific type of cancer. With our team and volunteers, we can help scientists find patterns of markers which “can determine whether an individual is susceptible to developing a specific form of cancer” and “suggest the best treatment for a given individual”. According to IBM’s “Mapping Cancer Markers” page:

“The project is analyzing millions of data points collected from thousands of healthy and cancerous patient tissue samples. These include tissues with lung, ovarian, prostate, pancreatic and breast cancers. By comparing these different data points, researchers aim to identify patterns of markers for different cancers and correlate them with different outcomes, including responsiveness to various treatment options.”

With your help, researchers and physicians will be able to “improve and personalize cancer treatment” and “accelerate cancer research”. Join us in helping to fight back against cancer. With your unused computing power, you can earn XP while helping fight a disease that has affected so many lives.
