During my summer design internship at Struck, I created a zine (or small publication) that showcases several core veterans of the team and some of their best work while at the agency. The theme of the zine was one of the agency’s primary pillars — guts.

The zine not only features projects that the participants hand-picked themselves, but also brief interviews where each person elaborates on what “guts” meant to them.

While this project did end up being a big bite to chew, I think it was ultimately an excellent decision for my internship (I learned so much!). My lessons included taking a crash course on InDesign and mastering the basics of creating a publication from scratch. From setting up a grid system, to choosing typefaces and color schemes, I now can confidently say I understand the basic ins and outs of putting together a volume of creative work. And one thing is for certain, I will never look at a publication in the same light again!

Most importantly, I learned that it takes a lot of talented, dedicated individuals working together to make an agency run effectively. It’s not about any one person, but the whole collective.

As they say, all good things must come to an end. It’s been a tremendous experience interning at Struck — one I won’t soon forget.

As my send-off, here are some selections from the forthcoming zine, titled appropriately, GUTS.

Eight Struck veterans were chosen to be featured in the zine. Each was given his/her own profile page with a pic and interview. In some cases, new profile photos were taken by Struck designer Michael DeHann.
A showcase of the Nickelodeon Animation Studio 25th Anniversary show.
A showcase of a campaign for Glasses.com.
The rebrand of Salt Lake’s Repertory Dance Theater in honor of the company’s 50th anniversary season.
A series of over 200 custom illustrations of Universal Studios executives.
The zine includes custom art by several talented people at Struck. This illustration, by associate creative director Dave Bunnell, is one of my personal favorites.
A winter campaign for the Utah Office of Tourism.
The U.S. Speedskating logo.
A showcase of the ACME style guide.
The Nickelodeon Animation Studio 25th Anniversary show.
Custom art by designer Michael DeHann.
A BIG thank you to everyone who made this project possible!
