Covid-19 has reduced the zen-like moments we experienced at the yoga studios, but not to be sad anymore thanks to online yoga sessions.

Starting an at-home yoga practice can ultimately save time, energy, and money. Practising yoga at home is often more beneficial because you can avoid driving, parking, and paying hefty prices to practice at a yoga studio.

Here are some tips to move at your own pace, listen and respond to your body, and develop greater consistency and frequency in your yoga practice.

Why yoga at home?

  • Yoga at home easily prepares you to build a habit of paying attention to your own body on any given day.
  • You can practice at any time of the day.
  • You get to wear what you like and you won’t have to worry about the yoga gear.

Starting yoga at home

  • You won’t have to worry about space. Simply grab a mat and choose or create a quiet, uncluttered space in your home for your practice.
  • Start out with small pockets of time (10–15 minutes). The key is, it has to fit in with your life and your schedule, this way it will be easy to maintain.
  • Begin with basic beginner’s yoga sequences and expand your practice as your skills improve.
  • Build a consistent home practice, start by choosing four or five poses that feel great. Starting with your favourite poses, this way you’ll feel compelled, rather than obligated, to roll out your mat.
  • Watch any yoga videos available on the internet or you can also book a verified professional Yoga Expert to get a guided session of yoga.

Warm up properly before attempting any advanced poses and be mindful of the transitions between poses.

If you’re new to yoga it might be difficult to distinguish between pain and discomfort. Pain feels hot and sharp, whereas discomfort is more of a slow, continuous sensation. If you do feel pain, move gently, or you can also soften, adjust or even use props to assist you.

Don’t forget about meditation and Pranayama

Pranayama is the practice of breath control in yoga, it consists of synchronising the breath with movements between asanas.

Practising at home is a great opportunity to build a meditation and Pranayama practice that is meditation, this will leave you feeling more centred and relaxed.

A great way to start is by practising with a member of your family or a friend. This will help you in learning some basic building blocks that will allow you to approach your home practice with confidence. No matter what always honour your body’s boundaries and avoid any pain.
