WhatsApp users will soon be able to read messages, reply to conversations, and take VoIP calls without the need to have their phones connected to them. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Wednesday that WhatsApp is rolling out its standalone app for smartwatches.

“You can now WhatsApp from your wrist with the new WhatsApp for Wear OS app,” Mark Zuckerberg said in his Instagram broadcast channel.

The beta version of the app has been launched so far and will be publicly available later in the year.

During the keynote session at the Google I/O 2023 event, CEO Sundar Pichai talked about the collaboration between WhatsApp and Google, which will allow users to use WhatsApp on their smartwatches.

What Is Wear OS?

In simple terms, it is an operating system for all Android-based smartwatches, with many smartwatches running on Wear OS. Therefore, WhatsApp has launched a new standalone app for Wear OS, allowing the app to run on the smartwatches themselves.

Will It Run On iOS As Well?

As per the announcement, WhatsApp is rolling out the standalone app for Wear OS, which means it will run on smartwatches that use Google’s operating system. Apple wearables work on their own operating system, WatchOS. Hence, as of now, you shouldn’t expect WhatsApp to run on Apple smartwatches.
