From 1820 to 1920, a massive wave of 34 million brave souls embarked on an epic journey to this land of dreams.

And guess which city stole the show? New York City, the reigning champ of immigrant hotspots.

By 1910, immigrants and their American-born kids ruled the concrete jungle, making up over 70 percent of its buzzing population.

Unlike the old-school immigrants, the fresh faces after 1900 came from non-English-speaking European lands.

Southern and eastern Europe sent the cool cats from Italy, Poland, and Russia.

They brought a whole new flavor to the melting pot culture and language, but adjusting to the American groove wasn’t a piece of cake.

On the other hand the U.S. struggled to handle the influx. Immigrants flocked to cities for jobs, turning them into overcrowded playgrounds.

The poor city services couldn’t keep up with the immigrant frenzy — it was more or less — like a snail trying to sprint a marathon.

However, these immigrants weren’t someone who knew how to quit!
