Today gender identity remains one of the most hard-fought battlegrounds of queer identity. Many notable figures, including she who must not be named, have taken a stand against anything other than the traditionally accepted ‘male’ and ‘female’ gender identities.

Questions surrounding gender identity are often ascribed as an entirely modern phenomenon. A millennial invention. Gender nonconformity has existed far longer than our modern viewpoint against it and has evolved organically all across the world since the dawn of human history. What’s more, it wasn’t limited to fringe groups at the edge of society, it was very much a part of mainstream life.
