The Year Of The Six Roman Emperors
The Crisis of Rome, where six people became emperors in a single year. Among them, the youngest and the oldest Roman emperor to ever exist.
The Crisis of the Third Century, also known as Military Anarchy and Imperial Crisis (235–284 AD) was a period where the Roman Empire nearly collapsed. Due to political instability, barbarian invasions, civil wars, rebellions, soldiers turning to mercenaries, Rome was devastated socially and economically. The beginning of the near fall of Rome started in 238 AD, a year that had six people claiming that they are the true emperors of Rome.
The Six Emperors were:
Maximinus Thrax: 20 March 235 - early May 238
Gordian I & Gordian II (Co-emperors): 22 March -12 April 238
Pupienus & Balbinus (Co-emperors): 22 April -29 July 238
Gordian III: 29 July 238 -11 February 244
Maximinus Thrax, Gordian I, and Gordian II
Maximinus Thrax was the commander of the Legio IV Italica when the former Emperor Severus Alexander was assassinated by his own troops in 235. The Pannonian army then elected Maximinus emperor. Historians claimed that Maximinus was a cruel tyrant. His war campaigns were against the Alemanni, whom he defeated, the Dacians, and the Sarmatians.
