Summer just isn’t really summer without a trip to the the ballpark, so we made the trek up to Yankee Stadium to enjoy America’s favorite pastime.

Whether you’re a diehard baseball fan or are still trying to grasp the intricacies of the infield fly rule, a visit to the ballpark is fun for everyone. You don’t need to be a baseball fanatic (or even understand all the rules of the game) to enjoy a day sitting out in the sun, eating greasy ballpark food, and taking in the party-like atmosphere in the stadium.

We donned our baseball caps and slathered on the sunblock on a hot summer Saturday, and headed uptown to see the New York Yankees take on the San Francisco Giants.

Root For the Home Team (or Maybe Not)

The Giants and the Yankees are in different leagues (The Giants are in the National League West whereas the Yankees are in the American League East), so they rarely play each other during the regular season. As such, it was a special privilege to see these two great teams go head to head. Although they aren’t exactly bitter rivals (cue the Red Sox/Yankees bad blood), tensions were high as passionate fans came from near and far to cheer on their favorite players.

Even our fellow explorers got in on the excitement; Bridget is a native New Yorker and a true Yankees fan, whereas Adela, a transplant from San Francisco, grew up going to Giants games. We took turns rooting for our respective teams as well as taunting each other’s — but don’t worry, it was all in good fun.

Buy Me Some Peanuts and Cracker Jacks

Everyone knows the real reason to go to a baseball game: the food. We waited in epic lines to buy our overpriced hotdogs and fries (and don’t forget the beer). We even sprung for the enormous souvenir cup so we could could take home a nice memento of the day.

To cool off after sitting out in the sun all day, we got some Dippin’ Dots during the 7th inning stretch. Yes, they’re still a thing, and yes, they’re still delicious.

Three Strikes & You’re Out

The game was a nail-biter, with neither team holding onto the lead for long. At the end of the 9th inning, the score was still tied, so into extra innings we went. Many attendees left the ballpark before the game was over, probably tired from a full day in the sun and anxious to beat the traffic. But being diehard fans, we decided to stick it out and see who would pull ahead. The game lasted a whole 12 innings! In the end, the Giants took home the win with a score of 2–1. The teams were very evenly matched, and it came down to a few lucky plays that put the Giants ahead.

Overall, everyone had a fantastic time. We walked back to the subway station exhausted and a little sunburnt, but very content.
