Quick Sobriety Tip #5: Connect With Other Addicts
Sobriety is much harder alone.
When I quit drinking, I was reluctant to reach out to other recovering addicts for support. There were a few reasons for this:
- I felt like my drinking habit wasn’t extreme enough to require outside support. (Although it certainly was.)
- I was worried that I would relapse and be harshly judged by others.
- I had bad social anxiety.
However, trying to get sober alone didn’t work for me. I spent all day inside my head, debating about whether to go back to drinking and playing through the same thoughts on repeat.
Once I started talking to other addicts about my experiences, sobriety began to go more smoothly. Connecting with others allowed me to vent, receive advice, and break out of my thought spirals.
