Alice Cooper might be the last person you’d ever expect to have gotten sober. On-stage, he’s known for his over-the-top, horror-inspired stage persona.

However, despite his love for shock rock, Cooper’s real life personality is on the opposite side of the spectrum. He’s a friendly, golf-loving, born-again Christian who prays every day and has been sober since the eighties.

Why Alice Cooper Got Sober

Alice Cooper has been open about his sobriety for many years. Unlike some musicians who prefer to keep the public perception focused on their on-stage persona, he has always been clear about the fact that the “Alice Cooper” we see on the stage is just an invented character.

Several years ago, in an interview with CTV News, Cooper explained his reasons for getting sober. He used to drink every day, eventually adding other drugs to the mixture as well. Although this was clearly excessive, he didn’t realize it at the time.

Cooper told CTV that “I didn’t realize that I was an alcoholic until I realized that the alcohol was not for fun anymore. It was medicine.”
