Last year, Bradley Cooper made headlines when Brad Pitt thanked him at the National Board of Review Gala. Pitt had won the NBR’s award for best supporting actor. In his award speech, he told the crowd that it was thanks to Cooper’s support that he was able to get sober.

While Pitt quit drinking relatively recently, Cooper got sober all the way back in 2004, at the young age of 29.

Surprisingly, the actor who is best known for his role in the Hangover trilogy has spent the vast majority of his acting career completely alcohol-free. Although he was still drinking during the years of his earliest films, he got sober the year before his breakout role in Wedding Crashers.

Stuck Inside His Head

Why did Bradley Cooper quit drinking and what has kept him sober for the past 17 years?

In a 2012 interview with the Hollywood Reporter’s Stephen Galloway, Cooper said that as an addict he “always felt like an outsider” and “lived in [his] head.”

Cooper was obsessed with what other people thought of him, which ironically drove him to actions which were sure to make people look down on him even more.
