German-American Editorial Cartoon

This is an editorial cartoon that shows how many Americans felt about German-Americans during WWI. Many Americans thought all German-Americans were spies throughout the war, leading to their culture being suppressed. This cartoon was published after Governor Frederick D. Gardner warned pro-Germans to stay out of the state and if they didn’t they would be put in front of a firing squad. The Missouri Governor then said “a pro-German is no better than a spy.”
