German County Political Cartoon

This cartoon is from an issue of the Advertiser Courier, the German-American newspaper in Hermann, from May 29th, 1918. The date is a little over a year after we joined the war, and people are starting to feel the effects. In this cartoon, it displays a poor and destitute family, presumably living in Europe where their home has been destroyed as collateral damage due to living by the front. Underneath is the words “Tired of saving wheat? You don’t know what it is to be tired.” This is a call urging its readers to keep up donating to the war effort, and to remember the people overseas have it much worse than we do right now.
