German Sunday Culture

German Americans and Anglo-Americans had different perspectives on how they should spend their time on Sundays. Anglo-Americans believed that Sundays are meant for God and did not want to violate Sabbath. Even though many Germans were also Christian they liked to spend their Sundays at social events which sometimes violated Sabbath. Anglo-Americans viewed Sundays as a day of rest and a time for religious exercise while avoiding labor and social diversions. Anglo-Americans believed in restrictions on Sunday entertainment and the Germans protested against these restrictions. The newspaper article I found sided with the Germans, the author references a demonstration in London. The writer does not believe that people should be unable to work on Sundays or be deprived of any form of entertainment. The writer states that the restrictions are not made equally between the rich and the poor. The upper class seem to have more freedoms on Sundays than the lower class. The author appears to have a distaste for the inequality that occurs on Sundays.
