2. Choose two papers to profile more closely. Look at a single issue of each of these papers and summarize the contents of each issue. What different kinds of articles/advertisements/content does each issue contain? What can we infer about its intended audience and political/cultural orientation?

The first paper that I have chosen to profile more closely is the Standard Atlas of Cole County that was first published in 1914. I was not able to find when the paper ended, but I did find interest in their advertising section. I am a Journalism major with a hope to get into advertising in my future career, so it was so interesting to see how different advertisements were in the past. There were 22 squares divided onto the page with different sizes for each different business, which I am assuming was based on how much each company would pay to be advertised in the newspaper. A personal favorite of mine was the B.H. Linhardt Construction Co. They were given the largest section of the first page of advertisements where it gives a brief history of B.H. Linhardt himself. Advertisements are offered to anyone who reads the newspaper, so I would say the audience is the general public of Cole County.

The second newspaper that I chose to profile more closely is The Loyal Missourian. The one section that I am focusing on was posted December 13, 1866 and is titled, “United States Senator” and it is speaking on Hon. Chas. D. Drake and Gov. Fletcher. It speaks on how Drake is a “well known Radical and Loyalist” and Gov. Fletcher is also well known by the citizens of Cole County for his service to our country as well as being an Executive Officer of distinguished qualifications. The newspaper specifically in this section was appealing to the majority Republican population of Missouri.
