Newspapers From Franklin County, MO

  1. Ozark News in St. Clair, MO from 1940–52

A look into this paper: I was able to find a paper from Dec 15, 1949 that talked about World War I and the impact of it on German Heritage. The rest of the paper has advertisements and cartoons. Some of the ads include 3-in-1 oil, Doan’s Back pills, Creomulsion (cough medicine), Kellogg’s PEP, Red Star dry yeast, and Eveready batteries. Some illustrations include religious media and illustrations to go with some of the articles and stories. A lot of the advertisements fit well in with the article and it is kind of hard to differentiate between what is an ad vs news. It has a lot of advice on relationships and marriage, which makes me think that around this time dating was a normal conversation. It also seems to not only focus on the war like many papers did.

2. Our County Paper in Pacific, MO from 1882–87

3. Franklin County Observer in Washington, MO from 1893–1926

4. Franklin County Tribune in Union, MO from 1896–1966

5. Gerald Journal in Gerald, MO from 1915–1964

6. New Haven Leader in New Haven, MO from 1918–1964

7. Pacific Transcript in Pacific, MO from 1923–33

8. St. Clair Chronicle in St. Clair, MO from 1927–77

A look into this paper: This article is from October 17, 1940 and has more news on WWI. This article is less light-hearted than the last and contains much less local news. Instead of just illustrations it has a few pictures of the people it talks about. One ad I thought was interesting was one about a hotel in St. Louis, which advertises it as a vacation or business trip. My favorite section of this paper includes a small story on the Northeastern Poultry Producers convention, where they claim a chicken as “Miss America” of the fowl world.

9. Republican Headlight in Union, MO from 1904–19

10. Sullivan Sentinel in Franklin, MO from 1901–14
