Prohibition in Franklin County

This text describes the United States’ decision to enact prohibition, making the manufacture, sale, and use of alcoholic drinks illegal. The amendment to the Constitution that made this possible was ratified by thirty-six states between January 1918 and January 1919, in large part due to the influence of the Anti-Saloon League of America. Prohibition is both an economic and moral issue, and the American people were encouraged to think of alcohol as a better source of grain for food than for liquor during World War I. The amendment does not go into effect until one year after its ratification, so the country is expected to become “permanently dry” on July 1st of the following year. Some individuals and organizations may challenge the amendment in court, however.
