Prohibition in Gasconade County, Missouri

This article is clipped from the Gasconade County Republican newspaper out of Owensville, MO. On top of discussing world events, this article mentions several players in American society and their views on the conflict surrounding Prohibition. It mentions both sides of the spectrum, however, the headline of the story talks about an anti-Prohibition perspective, so the newspaper might lean slightly towards anti-Prohibiton ideals. That would be expected considering Missouri was such a high alcohol-producing state before Prohibition began.

As stated in https://www.visitmo.com/articles/a-century-ago-prohibition-in-missouri, Missouri was the second-largest wine-producing state in the nation, so Prohibition had an extended impact on the economy in the state.

This story also mentions the fight to repeal the 18th Amendment, and that “wet” Republicans would fight Prohibition tooth and nail to repeal it. The repeal of the amendment became far more worthwhile to Americans when they realized the effect alcohol production had on our troops in WW2 and the American economy which is explained in the article at https://www.nationalww2museum.org/war/articles/how-world-war-ii-saved-american-beer-brewing. As we know, beer production in Missouri, especially in St. Louis is a massive proportion of the industry in the area and is therefore a major player in the economy of Missouri. The repeal of Prohibition opens Missouri’s economy up, and that’s what I think the significance of the publishing of this article is.
