I am planning to research the skill of reflective listening. For those who do not know what exactly reflective listening is, it is a communication strategy involving two steps. The first step is being able to understand a speaker’s idea or suggestion, and the second step is being able to offer the idea back to the speaker, confirming that you understand the idea or suggestion.

This skill is important to me because reflective listening is very important in today’s world and it is becoming so easy to get distracted. For example, people today spend a lot of time on their smart phones, this can lead to misunderstanding assignments, not hearing important information, along with other consequences. Everyone can benefit from my findings, this is a skill that everyone needs to have if they plan on succeeding in their career. This is because good reflective listening can make for great conversations that are more professional as well as effective. Some questions I plan to answer about this skill are what the key strategies are that contribute to reflective listening, this interests me because I want to know how to become a better listener. Another question I plan to answer is how to focus on a conversation and reduce any distractions, this interests me because it will give me an idea of how to increase my attention span.

My goal at the end is to have a firm understanding of the role that reflective listening plays in our day to day lives. I want to be able to apply this skill to my career, and improve on it every day. It’s the little details that count, and unfortunately it is these details that are often missed when communicating with a college. I will measure my progress by paying close attention to the strategies used to become a better reflective listener and apply them in every conversation I have. I will ask myself whether or not I truly understood what was just explained and if I could repeat it back to them if need be. Another way I could measure my progress is by sitting in lectures and being able to clearly state what I have learned.
