Why we really need to talk about endo

Endometriosis (en-doe-me-tree-O-sis, “endo” for short) is a complex health condition.

It is underdiagnosed and underresearched worldwide, despite its impact on those who suffer from it, their loved ones, the medical system, and society.

It’s even underdiscussed. It can be uncomfortable to broach taboo topics like painful sex, heavy periods, miscarriage, intestinal issues, and chronic pain. But even within the healthcare system, it’s downplayed or dodged altogether by physicians who don’t understand it.

Media coverage on endo has increased over the last few years, with celebrities like Lena Dunham, Tia Mowry, Amy Schumer and others opening up about the painful condition. While those stigma-challenging conversations help sufferers feel less isolated and ashamed, they barely even graze the surface of the reality of living with endo.

People have now heard about endometriosis, but that’s not enough. The narrative is still too simplistic and fraught with too many inaccuracies. Endo is not only a global health crisis but an urgent social justice issue.

Here are 13 things about endo that we still don’t talk enough about.
