As if the pandemic did not cause enough problems, now it is interrupting our much-needed sleep. Higher levels of stress, lack of time spent outdoors, and a greater amount of screen-time, are all making it harder to get a good night’s sleep.

According to Hackensack Meridian Health, prescriptions for sleep medications in the U.S. increased by 14.8% within the first few weeks of the shutdown. A new term has even been dubbed for sleepless nights because of the pandemic; “Coronasomnia.”

Common Advice Is Not Always Best

We have all heard the common tips and tricks:

  • exercise regularly
  • stick to a routine — go to bed at the same time every night
  • limit screen time before bed
  • keep your bedroom cool
  • make sure your bedroom is completely dark

These are all great tips, but are often easier said than done. Sometimes our jobs require us to be clicking away on our laptops long after the sun has gone down. Maybe you don’t have air conditioning and it’s not always possible to keep your bedroom cool. Maybe you have a job with odd hours which prevents the ability to stick to the same routine.
