Beginning with R

If you are planning to venture into the field of data science, you must have heard about the R language. This article aims at giving a brief introduction to R.
As defined on their website , “R is a free software environment for statistical computing and graphics. It compiles and runs on a wide variety of UNIX platforms, Windows and Mac OS.”
R is used for data manipulation, data analysis, statistical computing and graphics display. It is an implementation of the S language. S is a statistical programming language which was developed in 1976 by John Chambers.
Why should you use R and what are its advantages?
- R is free : it’s not a black box, and is available for a wide variety of Unix, platforms, Mac and Windows OS.
- It has a statistical computing environment, commands can be saved, run and stored in script files.
- R provides some built-in packages, and users are provided with the necessary tools to make their own packages.
- It provides logical control of branching and looping, and also supports modular programming.
- There is effective handling and storage of output. Graphical output can be viewed on screen, and there are also options to save a PDF format of the same.
