History Of The Show
The story of Comic-Con begins on March 21st, 1970 at the U.S. Grant Hotel. Called San Diego’s Golden State Comic-Minicon, its purpose, at the time, was to raise interest and funds for a larger event. They did get enough of both interest and cash to host San Diego’s Golden State Comic-Con, a three day event for 300 attendees. As the event grew larger, it outgrew its initial venue, and eventually moved into the San Diego Convention Center, where it has stayed ever since.
With attendance topping 168,000 people in 2018, it is one of the largest pop culture conventions in the world, and has hosted thousands of special guests. Comic-Con 2019 is scheduled for July 18–21st, and marks the 50th year of Comic-Con.
