They Must Fit Your Theme
If you have a global health conference, you don’t want to invest the time and money for a business person to hop up on stage and pitch them on the latest in the cryptocurrency industry, and vice-versa. The very first thing you need to ask yourself when considering someone to speak is “will they, and what they talk about, fit the theme of the show?” If the answer to that is no, there’s no need to have them at this specific event.
They Tell A Story
This is one of the most important bits. An engaging speaker should be able to create a story out of the topic they’re speaking about. They’re much more engaging and interesting to the listener. Keeping the audience entertained and informed is the primary job of the speaker.
They’re Flexible
In the grand scheme of things, some stuff just doesn’t work. Maybe a mic dies. Maybe one of the pages of their speech got lost. Maybe the teleprompter is stuck in Spanish. Whatever the case, make sure that the speaker is flexible enough to have the show go on, no matter what happens.
They’re Tech-Friendly
Great speakers can interact with the crowd using live polling apps, in-the-moment feedback, presentations, and other awesome tech gadgets to spice up the presentation. While just speaking in front of a crowd with nothing but you and a microphone is great, it really amplifies the experience when you have those visual/electronic elements.
You can utilize resources like the NSA (National Speakers Association), Celebrity Speakers Bureau, or lists like this one that are scattered around the internet. There are plenty of talented, engaging speakers that are at your disposal. Make the most of them and put on a kick-ass show for your guests!
