The gaming industry is a colossal market, valued at an astonishing $347 billion, dwarfing both the music and box office industries. To put this in perspective, the global gaming industry generated approximately $184 billion in revenue in 2022, compared to around $26 billion each for music and box office industries. However, despite the industry's massive growth, it is currently at a transformative juncture, poised for a potential revolution driven by Web3 gaming.

Web3 gaming, while not entirely new, is relatively young when compared to the history of video games. It began with the advent of cryptocurrencies, with Huntercoin being one of the first blockchain-based games. Despite its simplicity, Huntercoin enabled players to earn Bitcoin, amassing over a million dollars in earnings since its launch in 2014. Today, popular Web3 games like Axie Infinity and Alien Worlds boast a trade volume of around $7 million. Yet, these games have not captured the mainstream gaming audience. Why?

Several factors contribute to the limited appeal of Web3 gaming among mainstream gamers. Firstly, Web3 games often lack the engaging gameplay found in modern games. While titles like Axie Infinity and Alien Worlds offer decent gameplay loops, they pale in comparison to contemporary games, often relying solely on financial incentives to attract players. Secondly, the prevalence of rug pulls, where games suddenly disappear with players’ money, is a significant deterrent. The 2022 Blockverse scandal exemplifies this risk, where an unofficial Minecraft game vanished after collecting over a million dollars. Lastly, the onboarding process for Web3 games is cumbersome.

Traditional video games require players to learn the game and pay a typical price of around $60. In contrast, entry into mainstream Web3 games can be prohibitively expensive. For instance, starting to play Axie Infinity might require an investment of at least $1,000. Although free-to-play models like Alien Worlds offer a solution, they do not address the complexity of the Web3 ecosystem.

The Web3 ecosystem is intricate, involving crypto wallets, NFTs, and marketplaces, which are unfamiliar to many mainstream gamers. While numerous guides and influencers try to bridge this knowledge gap, it remains insufficient. Fortunately, new tools like Solana Actions and Blinks promise to simplify this process.

Solana Actions expedites and streamlines blockchain transactions, enabling players to manage in-game assets efficiently. Blinks ease the process by turning Solana Actions into shareable links, enabling transactions directly from websites, social media, or messaging apps. For example, a Blink can show a transaction preview in your wallet without opening a separate app or let you trade NFTs directly through chatbots on platforms like Discord.

These added tools generally make it easier for mainstream gamers to understand the Web3 ecosystem, bridging the knowledge gap and equipping them with the skills needed to thrive in the Web3 gaming industry. However, it’s crucial that Web3 games are not only accessible but also genuinely engaging, well-designed, and grounded in the Web3 ecosystem.

Today, many mainstream publishers and developers are getting involved in the Web3 ecosystem and helping introduce it to a broader audience. For example, Ubisoft has recently announced that their game Champions Tactics will offer a limited set of free NFTs for players. This strategy can help familiarize mainstream gamers with NFTs and their potential, but the Web3 components of these games mustn’t be forced. Forced Web3 integration can create two major problems. First, it can dissociate the game’s core experience from its blockchain features, making the integration unnatural and disrupting gameplay immersion. Second, it can lead to resistance from players who perceive the Web3 elements as gimmicks rather than enhancements. To avoid these pitfalls, developers must build Web3 games from the ground up, ensuring that blockchain features are seamlessly integrated into the gameplay. This approach fosters a natural and engaging gaming experience, where NFTs and other Web3 components enhance the core gameplay rather than detract from it.

One of the main challenges that must be addressed for the market to flourish is the onboarding of mainstream gamers into Web3 games. Tools like Solana Actions and Blinks can help streamline the onboarding process for traditional gamers exploring Web3 gaming by making blockchain transactions more accessible and efficient. More tools like these must be developed to attract mainstream gamers to Web3 gaming.

Creating high-quality games grounded in the Web3 ecosystem is also essential. Developers must prioritize immersive, engaging gameplay experiences while naturally integrating blockchain elements. This balanced approach will build trust and interest among mainstream gamers, leading to a more vibrant and inclusive gaming community. By following these strategies, the Web3 gaming industry can attract a larger audience and ensure long-term success and sustainability. The true potential of Web3 gaming will only be realized when onboarding mainstream gamers becomes as seamless and engaging as the games themselves.
