He loved it when he chose mentees that proved him right. Despite the cold weather, the student he met with was here early, engaging with executives. A smile danced across the man’s lips, the student was dressed well. Despite being the field of education, politics and perception were just as important. Thankfully, the student was proving to be a fast learner.

The vice president approached his young apprentice. Handshakes were exchanged along with some casual commentary. Together, they scanned the room and identified the players in the area. Mornings were ideal for identifying the political layout. It was the young professional’s favorite exercise. Even through his sunglasses, his neck gave him away. It snapped from side to side with deliberate action. Moments like these were times that his quick learning came in handy. He only had to introduce his understudy once or twice, the student would handle it from there. A few administrators gathered, as they typically do, to discuss the days happenings. Mostly the symbolic significance of who and who wasn’t there. The side chatter was annoying, but a part of the work.

As the event tried to get underway, the vice president locked eyes with his apprentice. At last, the moment in which everybody’s efforts would crystalize or collapse. Calls went out for the first singer before the march. No response. The administrators began gossiping gleefully. The two gentlemen simply shared a smile for a moment, a conversation for another time.

The event lurched onward. Missteps were common. Completely missing the memo was another thing. His president was missing. She wouldn’t accept this, he thought. Then again, she was very perceptive, which was probably why she didn’t show up today. He wouldn’t be surprised.

He marched. Although he couldn’t see his mentee, the vice president knew his protege was around. The thought made him straighten his posture immediately. Being a mentor was hard, how do you ensure you’re always looking like a role model?
