Podcasts That Go (Far) Beyond Summarizing a Wikipedia Article

What is it about My Favorite Murder? The perennially popular podcast of two friends awkwardly chatting and reading Wikipedia articles about famous murders is finally back from a summer hiatus! But if you find that the newest episodes have been stacking up in your queue rather than being devoured immediately upon release, I have Murderino approved recommendations on a wide variety of subjects. Some well-established and some you’ve probably not heard of. Enjoy!

The Clearing

This podcast is hosted by the daughter of serial killer Ed Edwards, as she tries to piece together her childhood and reconcile her memories with her fathers’ crimes. She reflects on all the places she lived as a child and compares her memories against cold cases. An incredibly well-done podcast. All episodes should be out soon, letting you binge to your heart's content.

Ear Hustle

A podcast that shows the realities of prison life, from current and former residents of San Quentin. This multiple award-winning podcast serves to humanize the incarcerated population while showing the struggles both inside prison and during reintegration. If you’ve ever wondered how things work in prison, they likely cover it. Everything from being on death row to what jobs prisoners have to the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ prisoners.

Let’s Go to Court

A well-researched podcast, that should appeal to true crime fans. Two lawsuit obsessed friends discuss the cases that fascinate them. Ever wondered what really happened with the infamous McDonald’s hot coffee lawsuit? They break it down and the answers are often surprising.

The Dream

The Dream shines a light on the American obsession with get rich quick schemes, namely multi-level marketing. Breaking down how these schemes work, and how they prey on women in particular. If you’ve ever had a “Hey hon!” appear in your dm’s from someone you vaguely remember from high school, The Dream is a must-listen.

The Baby-sitters Club Club

Yes, really. This is a podcast about your favorite book series from sixth grade. Kristy, Claudia, Dawn; the whole gang is here. Two adult men read every installment of the series and then discuss the books, with the dynamic between the two being a large part of the fun. Often called a favorite when mentioned, it’s recommended you start this bizarre and addictive podcast from the beginning.

This Podcast Will Kill You

Two grad students get together and discuss a disease or epidemic in each installment of this podcast. From the unbelievable and weird to the truly spectacular, this one will have you cringing about all the reasons you need to wash your hands, right now!

Ologies

If you prefer a more anthologized type of podcast, you’ll love Ologies. A different subject is covered in-depth in every episode. Everything from forensic handwriting analysis to hagfish to mycology. This one is an absolute delight.
