The Doomsday Clock — January 2021
No, is not going all well, on the contrary; there are only sixty seconds to the point of no return.
The message, amplified by the media that everything will be fine and technology will solve every problem is simply false, we need a quick turnaround of our behaviors to avoid catastrophe, we must start today because tomorrow will be too late.
The pandemic has hitten the world causing many death and economic fault, especially in the poorest countries. Human beings are complex organisms and therefore more exposed to disease and our immune system is becoming increasingly weak and victim of the new threats to come. We need to change our lifestyle to live healthier (eliminating smog, junk food, and reducing stress) in order to strengthen our immune system and be able to fight the new diseases.
We need to reduce the disparities in wealth owned, very few people have enormous wealth while most have difficulty living, and some even to survive; this cannot continue yet.
Better food, a healthy life, and an upbringing worthy of the name are the building blocks of a long and satisfying life.
We must change the economic development model to give everyone the possibility of a better future by avoiding waste and eliminating the senseless accumulation that has brought us this far.
The climatic change that produces natural upheavals will worsen over time and we are just watching what is happening instead to act to reduce the risk of impending natural disasters.
Resounding proclamations, false beliefs, and growing hypocrisy will not avert the heralded disaster.
We risk to disappear on the surface of the earth, we, not the planet and even if global warming did not have anthropogenic causes, as some are saying, we should still act instead of dancing unconsciously on the Titanic before the tragedy.
Artificial intelligence must be safe, ethical, and accessible to all; it must be controlled by preventing it from completely replacing human work and used to implement total control by violating people’s privacy and putting their freedom at risk.
Social media born to connect people have become tools of propaganda and manipulation of ideas, access to the internet must be guaranteed to everyone and has to be used safely, avoiding that the true and the false mix together and the fake news make this world unlivable.
Dystopia is replacing Utopia, instead, we need Utopias to design a new world, we must also restore the primacy of justice so that people feel part of a single global family.
Freedom is an achievement to be preserved in this age where totalitarianism and wars are always on the rise. It is no longer enough to observe thinking that the cataclysm will not touch us because it is only a matter of time and then it will.
There are only sixty seconds left to the apocalypse; we must act now, by getting out of the torpor that has been with us for too long, before it is too late
