The People’s Summit 2017 Shows Us That Resisting Trump Is Only Part 1
Finally, a major political gathering completely dedicated to pushing and implementing progressive policies.
When the Bernie 2016 campaign was starting to really pick up steam, in June of 2016, the first People’s Summit was held, with speakers including Rosario Dawson, Tulsi Gabbard, Naomi Klein, and Nina Turner.
Now, it’s time for round two. The People’s Summit 2017 is June 9–11, featuring speakers Josh Fox, Jane Sanders, Jesse Eisenberg, Amy Goodman, Nomiki Konst, Ro Khanna, Zephyr Teachout, Rob Quist, and the man himself, Bernie Sanders, among many others.
Jim Hightower, a progressive activist from Austin Texas said this at the opening of the summit:
I think we’re all here because the powers that be are not at all there in terms of grasping the essential not ion that we’re supposed to all be in this together. So we’re not merely out to thump Trump, but to take on the entire power structure of the bosses, … the bankers, the big shots, the bastards, and the bullsh*ters who are imposing their plutocracy, autocracy, and kleptocracy over us.
Nina Turner in an interview with Jordan Chariton (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoOAzh_fmWA)at the summit said this:
If Jared Kushner did something wrong, let the chips fall where they may; if President Trump has done something wrong, let the chips fall where they may; if General Flynn has done something wrong — if the investigation proves that those folks have done something wrong (and others), let the chips fall where they may. But at the same time, can we do something for the people right here in the United States of America.
She continues on later in the interview:
This is a movement. This is not just about resistance Jordan, this is about resilience. And what resilience says is that we’re gonna stand up for what is right even if in that moment you don’t see the win.
Can’t wait for when these people get into higher public office.
While resisting Trump is important and necessary, what matters most is what we persist for, and what we insist for. We will insist and persist for universal healthcare, free-tuition college, a $15 minimum wage, corporate-influence-free elections, transforming our energy system, and so many other vital progressive policies that will dramatically improve the lives of working and middle class Americans.
So far, The People’s Summit has been the only political gathering in modern history to set this desperately needed tone. #PPLSummit
