What’s that sound? It’s 1.4 million trans people rolling up their sleeves.
To the Trashcan-in-Chief:
You have made it increasingly clear that you plan to eliminate basic protections for transgender people, my family. You have made it increasingly clear that you do not view my family as fully human. You have made it increasingly clear that you do not intend to treat my family with dignity or respect.
So let me make something increasingly clear:
We will not be broken. We will not back down. We will not lose hope.
And now, to my trans family and our allies:
It cannot go unacknowledged: this is another blow in a long series of attacks on our community from this administration. First, he attacked the youngest among us by putting trans youth in dangerous and compromising positions at schools. Then, he attacked the thousands of transgender people who serve in the military, claiming that we must now choose between our identities and our jobs.
He has absolutely refused to include us in federal nondiscrimination laws. He has repeatedly supported a predatory police system that harasses and targets us, especially those of us who are black, brown, and/or undocumented. Infuriatingly, the list goes on.
Make no mistake: Donald Trump and his allies are waging war on us.
We must rally and organize to keep ourselves safe, especially those of us who are most at risk.
So here’s the situation:
According to a study by the National Center for Transgender Equality, 79% of people in the United States who have transitioned have at least one ID or government record that has not been updated to accurately reflect their identity. The study also confirmed that gender incongruent identification “exposes people to a range of negative outcomes, from denial of employment, housing, and public benefits to harassment and physical violence.”
If the numbers collected on the size of our community are accurate,
over one million of us have at least one ID or government record that needs to be updated.
Our survival depends on our having accurate and affirming IDs and government records. And that’s why all of us at the Trans Assistance Project are busting our asses to make that a reality for hundreds of thousands of people across the country.
Getting accurate and affirming IDs and records can be complicated, infuriating, and traumatic for trans people. On top of that, the entire process can cost hundreds of dollars.
As trans folks ourselves, we’re standing with our trans family as they navigate this process. We guide our trans family through the process of changing their IDs and records, and then we pay for it so they don’t have to.
But we can only do that work if we have money to give out.
By supporting the Trans Assistance Project, you are putting money directly into the pockets of the hundreds of trans people across the country who have signed up for assistance from us.
By making a monthly donation to the Trans Assistance Project, you’re giving much-needed resources directly to the members of our trans family who need it most.
Make a recurring donation today.
The survival of trans people in this country depends on it.

P.S. Never lose hope. We can do this. We can fight this. We’re not going anywhere.
