WSL Title Race Drama
After a 37th minute strike by Maika Hamano against Spurs helped put Chelsea back into pole position to win their fifth WSL title in a row, will Emma Hayes’ side complete the job or will Manchester City break the dark blue grip on the top prize?
A few weeks ago, after Chelsea’s shock 4–3 defeat away to Liverpool, Emma Hayes cast a resigned figure admitting that their title rivals City would probably go on to win it and be deserved winners in doing so.
However, Chelsea’s 8–0 win against Bristol City and Arsenal’s Steina Blackstenius blew the title race wide open after after her two late goals in the 89th and 92nd minute downed Manchester City 2–1 at the Joie stadium.
Both Chelsea and City have 52 points each, with Chelsea ahead on goal difference by 47 to 45, as well as leading goals, scoring 65 compared to City’s 59.
This season’s title will be won with the lowest points tally in history which is testament to the increased competitiveness of the league.
Chelsea will travel to Old Trafford to face recently crowned FA Cup winners Manchester United with hopes of sending Emma Hayes and club legend Fran Kirby off on a high.
City travel to Aston Villa with hopes of winning their first title since 2016.
Chelsea have shown frailties in their defence recently, and United will prove tough opposition
Since the injury of leagues top goalscorer Bunny Shaw with 21 in 18 games, City have shown concerns up front and may struggle to catch up to Chelsea’s goal difference.
Whoever ends up taking home the trophy, expect drama and the most exciting end to a WSL season since its inception.
