“Parasite” won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, a first for a Korean film. I have to say that this movie is undoubtedly the most interesting movie in 2019. For most, there was nothing odd about Bong’s win. “Parasite,” a class satire about two families — one of the poor hustlers living in a subterranean dwelling subsisting on their wits and stolen Wi-Fi, the other wealthy and residing in a stylish modern mansion — has been roundly hailed as a masterpiece and, Parasite” — balance humor and horror, satire and sincerity with magical ease.

Choi Woo-shik, Song Kang-ho, Jang Hye-jin, and Park So-dam in Parasite.

“The topic of the gap between rich and poor lends itself to being so universal, Every country has its own structures and conflicts regarding class, but when you really delve deep into the cave of capitalism and explore the infinite darkness of it, you find a similar sort of mechanism flows throughout, Whenever we pass by people, whether they’re rich or poor, even if we only see them for three seconds, we see what kind of clothes they’re wearing, what watch they have, what phone they’re using, what car they’re getting out of,” Bong told The Times recently at the Telluride Film Festival, where the film earned a rapturous reception.

The smell, which indicated the belonging of the poor family, and crossing the line

The smell ran throughout the movie, with nearby hooligans peeing in front of their windows, and street disinfection sprayed into their entire room. Every time Mr. Park and Mrs. Park pinch their nose naturally when they get the driver Mr. Kim’s smell of the body. Even the killing of Mr.park comes from this action. In English, describing the poor would say, He is as poor as a church mouse, Asians often use “odor of poverty” to express poor, such as stinginess, greed, and so on. Here is also a metaphor. Even if Kim’s family entered a rich family to work and have a stable income, the poverty mentality is difficult to disappear. The way of doing things and expressing and choice of clothes will show your’s poverty background...

Rain

On the night when Kim’s family was happy to occupy the Park’s house, the sudden visit of the former housekeeper revealed the shocking fact that her husband lived in the basement for several years, the Park’s family returned home early because of heavy rain, and the heavy rain washed everyone back to their original shape.

Heavy rain struck, and Kim’s family slept on the streets due to flooding. At this time, the youngest son of Park’s family set up a tent in the courtyard and enjoyed the joy of camping on a rainy day. It is “favorite” for Mr.Park ’s beloved son, the same rain hits two families, forming completely different feelings, showing there is a big difference between society and an inferior society. When the family was flooded, Mr.Kim’s son took nothing but clung to a landscaped stone. That stone was like a ticket to the upper world to him. When he tried to destroy the evidence with a stone and turned over forever (parasitic), not only was he unsuccessful but was knocked down and caused uncontrollable results.

Basement

The director used two basements to indirectly show the gap between the rich and the poor. The semi-underground floors of Korean houses were originally used as a refuge in the event of a North Korean raid, as rents became cheaper over time and became homes for the poor.

The air defense basement in the mansion is spacious and well-equipped, but it has become a secret refuge for the poor. The poor dream to has a better life, waiting and even creating opportunities; the rich keep their distance from the poor, and they are wary not to cross them. The mansion in the film is a weird space in which the rich and the poor coexist, which is just a microcosm of social class mobility.

The Most Memorable Quotes

Rich people are naive. No resentments. No creases on them. It all gets ironed out. Money is iron. Those creases all get smoothed out.

Money is really a good thing. Although it can’t solve all problems, it will give you more choices and many things can be solved. You will not be overly stressed or worried about the future. Since we were born, what kind of family you have grown up is not something we can decide. Some people can inherit hundreds of millions of inheritances at the moment of birth, but some people may be born with endless debts. This is real life. It really looks unfair, but the only thing we can do is to accept your environment and try our best to make ourselves richer. But it’s also important to choose how you want to get rich.

Do you know what kind of plan never fails? No plan at all. No plan. You know why? If you make a plan, life never works out that way. Look around us, did these people think ‘Let’s all spend the night in a gym?’ But look now, everyone’s sleeping on the floor, we included. That’s why people shouldn’t make plans. With no plan, nothing can go wrong and if something spins out of control, it doesn’t matter.

This is what Mr. Kim said to his son after the storm. He also tried to do business, worked hard, full of hope for life, but failed. How many times did he fail after making the plan, so that he has given up the plan in the face of life, we can see the greed, laziness, and deceit of Kim’s family, but also see their helplessness, despair, and sadness.

She’s rich but still nice. Not “rich, but still nice.” She’s nice because she’s rich. Hell, if I had all this money. I’d be nice, too!

The Park family is actually very kind to the people they hired, although they can’t understand the situation of the poor, there is nothing wrong with their perspective. Indeed, because of rich, we can be more generous and more nice, we will have more time to think about doing more meaningful things. Poor people may need to worry about not being unable to eat, paying tuition, economic pressure. The economic base determines the superstructure. Of course, even if we are poor, we can still choose be nice. Our Character is a choice and always in our own hands. Poverty is definitely not an excuse for us to deceive others, steal, or violence.

But that’s what makes the ending such a gut-punch: it’s about fantasy. We know that Ki-woo will probably not earn enough money to buy the house because Parasite shows that economic mobility is dead. But it also gives the audience a little hope of reverie.

Is our fate decided the moment we’re born? I feel completely concerned about our perspective of things and have to admit, if they are born in rich families, they will indeed have better resources and opportunities. However, some people were born in very good families and were well educated, but they used knowledge to do illegal things or end up poor.

Some people were born poor, but they spent 10 times work harder than others to live, and even several generations worked hard to change their destiny. After all, their next generation, the next of next-generation, had a rich life. It’s like playing a video game. The game we get may be easy or difficult. but I believe that when we pass the level, we will be able to feel the joy of success. We have gone through hard work and will bear many precious fruits. In addition, some people feel very happy when they reach level 10, and some people may not be satisfied even if they reach level 50.

No one in this world has stopped you from getting rich, and it is your own way of thinking that has stopped you. There is no immutable class in this world. It is you who really solidifies the class. What kind of life do we want? What can make us truly happy and satisfied? Life has never been easy, but I always believe that after the storm, hope is over there. Don’t think too much, just go forward bravely!
