Clinton and Trump’s debates had us raising eyebrows and giggling over the stabbing and slaying that are leading to this year’s elections.

And this digging of the past and fault passing has made us wonder from a business stand point how would you justify one mistake or another, and how would you promise to change the world for the better?

Growing a business, or even growing ourselves as professionals, is such an intricate journey that is sprinkled with mistakes more often than not. And that’s ok because that’s how we learn to do our jobs better. But in the business world where not that many mistakes are allowed, how do you rule and become a leader that everybody respects and looks up to?

1. It might sounds too normal, but one of the things a leader does is focusing on and respecting individual strengths. So many alleged leaders nowadays take people’s experience for granted. Don’t ever believe your experience is greater than others, you’d be surprised to see how other people react much better than you in critical situations.

2. Be accountable. Although both Trump and Hillary Clinton are failing at this one, you make sure that as a leader you are accountable for any mistakes you’ve done, explain where those mistakes have taken you, and why it was important for you to learn from them. Otherwise you will never be trusted.

3. Learn new things about your job (and not only) everyday. Read, get informed, ask questions. Don’t just limit yourself to information related only to your field. Keep up to date with the trends, what is happening in the world, successful stories, fail stories, learn from everything and apply it in your everyday life.

4. Network. Build your tribe of people that you can turn to whenever you need guidance. Establish connections with them, tell them about what you do, where you would need help, where you could help yourself. Word of mouth, connections, networking is one of the strongest things you can do in business.

5. Find yourself a mentor. Just like any therapist has a therapist of their own, leaders need someone they can turn to, or consult with as well. That doesn’t mean you’re not enough of a leader if you discuss matters with your mentor, it just means you can see things more clearly.
