CR#4 Life at Silver Lake Village

What? (from the Context Worksheet)

Name of organization you work with: Silver Lake Village: A life plan community
The stated mission of the organization: A Life Plan Community offers you the ability to enjoy your current active lifestyle while putting a plan in place for your future needs. The comprehensive continuum of services and care options offer you and your family complete peace of mind.
What are the programs/services provided?: Spring Lake Village includes independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing care, outpatient rehabilitation services, exceptional memory care, and a preferred partner for home care.
What is the targeted issue(s)?: Older adults who need extra help with everyday activities. Some need more help than others, but in general, the campus and the staff are both to help their residents maintain life like it was before they moved to Silver Lake Village. The target population of this organization is the geriatric population.
What are some identified qualities/qualifications for people to be part of the program/services?: The residents all vary in ableism, but the similarities are their ability to pay for this program and their age.
The larger context of Marin County (or the county of your community engagement)
What is the composition of the county’s population? Majority of the residents are white geriatric patients. There are some Asian residents, but not much diversity besides that. However, many of the staff members are not white. There are some Filipino, Hispanic, and Latinx workers.
What is the percentage of your community organization’s target population in relation to the county’s population as a whole? I am not sure what this question is referring to.

What are some discrepancies/differences between your engagement community and the general Marin county community in terms of privilege and access to resources?: I feel like my organization has more access to different facilities than some parts of Marin County. My campus has a pool, gym, bank, library, and their own chefs, which is not available to everyone in this county.
Any findings on the history of how the discrepancies/differences came to be? I could not find any.
Is there anything in your findings that is emotionally charged, or could potentially cause resentment and/or harm in certain populations? I feel like some populations may feel jealous towards these residents because these people have enough money to pay for this luxurious lifestyle.

The main problem I took away was that the underrepresented communities are hard to count for the census, which is bad for fundings from the government to benefit the organizations that provide services for those communities. Making sure that all people are counted by being more involved within the communities and non-profits that serve those areas. If some people were not being accounted for in my community, it could lead to some serious problems and dangers. I serve with the geriatric population and so some of the dangers can be a fall or wounds that could lead to infections, which might even lead to death.
