5 The story with in the picture

What? How do Iris Marion Young and Ada Isasi-Diaz define and explain the concept of Oppression? What does Diaz mean when she identifies herself as “oppressed and impoverished”?

Iris says that that the concept of oppression has been current among racials since the 1960 partly in reaction to Marxist attempts to reduce the injustices of racism and sexism. And Diaz says that oppression has different causes that need to be made explicit in order to struggle for justice in a more effective way than we have done since the 1960. I think that Diaz means when she Identifies herself as oppressed as a latina living in the U.S.

So What? What is the significance of observing and articulating of the day-to-day, what Diaz calls lo cotidiano experiences? Share a moment or seemingly mundane pattern that has larger implications of the larger structure of things. (Use textual evidence to make connection to your personal and community experiences)

The significance of observing and articulating of a day to day is that Diaz calls cotidiano experience is that in our community and in life we have some type of relationship with someone. We relate to each other not only by physical reality but also by culture which binds us as human beings and by all the different perspectives/ backgrounds that we have. Everyday we have some type of ritual that we repeat every day that just seems part of our lives that just feels natural. According to DIaz “ common sense, which is shy it is considered “natural”. I think that repetition is what makes something not as a big deal.

Now What? What are 2–3 ways you could start to observe lo cotidiano experiences in the lives of people you work with in the community? Cite ideas from readings, and consider the particular context of your community partner’s program. Be concrete and specific when you list and explain the strategies — more than just “paying more attention.”

At my time at Rotacre in San Rafael I have seen some difficulties that some latinos face. The first is the most common and that is not being able to speak english so that causes and limits them from jobs that can keep them above poverty. The language barrier is a constant problem for those who don’t know English. I have seen that some people don’t know how to write and that could be from their background experience, were they did not learn the basics in school. In the article Diaz mentions how the little boy and mother looked and what their situation was after hearing the little boy say to his mother that she smelled bad. I saw this women recently with here kid at Rotacare and just that made me think about the story behind they showed up.
