How does an ideal Aptitude training program look like?
Based on our experience of training over 20 lakh students, multiple iterations over the 9 years we have arrived at a model for aptitude training that we believe will help your students give fairly good results.
Lift-off Phase:
This is the initial phase. Students are typically far off from their placements and their is no real urgency right now. Hence, this is an ideal time to teach them some calculation techniques. This is going to help in two ways:
- The speed at which the problems can be solved using these techniques is going to amaze students and this would be a great way arouse interest of students towards aptitude.
- Application of calculation techniques is going to help reduce time drastically, we have typically seen the time go down by 40–50% using these techniques. Hence, it is important to teach them at the beginning so that when they come to solving the actual problems they use these techniques. Enough practice will make them adept at applying them.
Throttle phase:
The students are enthused towards learning aptitude. And before they jump into solving all the problems they need to be aware of the concepts. Hence, this second phase should focus on getting students to learn all the Basic concepts and do some basic problem solving such that these concepts get cemented in their mind.
We have typically seen that Verbal is an area where a lot of students lag. Hence it might be a good idea to put some extra focus on Verbal during this phase.
Ascent phase:
Placements are now close and students are also eager to acquire skills required to get placed. It is now time to shift gears. The students are aware of the topics and this is the time to put those skills to test. It is important to take a Practice-Centric approach at this phase and get students to solve as many problems as possible.
The focus should be on:
- Question selection
- Developing a thought process in approaching a problem
- Application of calculation techniques & reduce time to solution
Deploy Phase:
The students are now thorough with all the concepts and are doing fairly well. Now it is time to give your students that extra edge which is going to make it hard for companies to reject them.
Though each company tests students on similar skills, the language used in the problems and the way in which the questions are put across are a bit different. By familiarizing students with these they can reduce surprises, reduce the time to solve and in-turn solve more questions. Train your students on Company Specific Test Patterns for all the companies visiting your campus.
We at FACE, follow a similar structure during training our students. And the results thus far have been phenomenal.
