Taking a long-term approach towards placements & training

Students who are especially in their 1st and 2nd years are going to be placed in jobs that do not exist today or have just been created. So how do you train them to be ready for the future?

Boston Consulting Group (BCG), one of the Big 3 management consulting firms in the world, has identified 55 new roles that have just been created across 8 new technologies. These roles are going to have massive requirement in years to come.

And according to the industry experts, here are the skills that are required to master at this:

According to this Ernst & Young(EY) report, there is still 2–3 years time before these disruptive technologies start having effect on the society and business. If the students are not trained in these technologies by then, there is going to be a massive skill gap between what the industry wants and what the students are equipped with — hence affecting your placement numbers.

How to overcome this challenge? Take a long-term approach towards placements. Start training students with a long term approach in mind. From the above infographics it is very clear that cognitive skills and IT skills are going to be of utmost importance for the jobs of the future. Start training your students on these skills from now on. If required, hire a training partner who could do this with you.

Lot of academic curriculums are not equipped enough to train the students on these skills. Work on how the academic curriculum can help strengthen the skill-sets of your students.

Colleges like Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) have taken this long-term approach towards placements. They have built an immersive training program into their curriculum for all the 4 years which trains the students on the skills required for the future. And, the results are there to see. They have one of the highest placement numbers in the country with almost all reputed recruiters visiting the college. The results translate into the admission numbers as well, with VIT having one of the highest student intakes in the country.
