Talent Reviews at Amazon: Tips for People Managers
1. Assess: use data on the What and How of each employee’s performance to draft an initial performance rating. Start with the objective Amazon assessment criteria and refer to the Leadership Principles.
2. Compare: sense-check and refine the rating for each employee relative to your impression of their peers (people in the same job family & at the same level) in your department. Then discuss these ratings with your manager.
3. Debate: meet with all the department managers to calibrate the comparative performance ratings of employees at each level to achieve a balanced distribution.
