The Current and Future State of APIs

Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) are the building blocks of modern software. They allow software systems to communicate, taking inputs and returning predictable outputs. If you’d like a refresher on APIs, read a Fact about them here.

Postman surveyed more than 37,000 software developers and learned the following:

  1. Developers report that 51% of their organization’s software development efforts and time are spent on APIs. That’s up from 40% in 2020.
  2. API investments to remain strong. 89% of respondents say their organization’s investment in APIs will increase or remain the same over the next 12 months.
  3. Businesses are increasingly using APIs to share data and offer services internally. The number-one factor in deciding whether to consume and produce an API is how well it integrates with internal systems.
  4. Businesses lack developers with API design skills. (Hint, hint to job seekers!) This can lead to too many APIs which perform overlapping functionality within a company — a poor design decision.
