Indigenous Canada
In 2017, the most popular massive open online course in Canada on the Coursera Platform was one that teaches Indigenous histories and contemporary issues from an Indigenous perspective. Created by the Faculty of Native studies and called “Indigenous Canada”, the course is available free to anyone, anywhere.
Massive open online courses (MOOCs) allow unlimited access and participation via the Internet. With 25 million learners and more than 2000 courses, Coursera, the distribution platform for Indigenous Canada, is the largest provider of MOOCs in the world.
Since Indigenous Canada launched in March 2017, the Canadian Federation of Library Associations and Edmonton Public Library have both teamed up with the Faculty of Native Studies to promote the course to patrons. The Morinville Public Library also ran a learning circle to provide support to patrons working through the course.
Indigenous Canada was created with the support of the Centre For Teaching and Learning.
