On June 1, 2023 we said goodbye to the Red River Cart that had stood in front of Pembina Hall since June 2016. The cart was dismantled and distributed with some parts returning to our community partners at the Rupertsland Institute (RLI) to be used as an educational tool.

Later that month on June 23rd, we gathered on the front lawn of Pembina Hall to welcome the arrival of our new Red River Cart that was purchased from Rocky Mountain House Métis Local President, Bernie Ouellette through a generous donation from the Rupertsland Institute.

The new cart stands beside the tipi in front of Pembina Hall

We celebrated the arrival of the new cart with a Métis Talks session on the front lawn of Pembina Hall. We were treated to the outstanding music of Métis fiddler, Zach Willier, followed by an informative presentation from Bernie Ouellette who talked about the construction and history of the Red River Cart. Afterward, we headed into the classroom for a presentation from our community partners at the Rupertsland Institute who talked about, pîmastîhwâkiskiyihta: Weaving Together Authentic Métis Education.
